Clockwise from upper left: The first image is of a man in dark gray pants and a white shirt. He has dark brown hair and sits in a chair with a black cushion while holding pieces of paper. Behind him are the columns and ceiling pipes of a gallery. The words “I saw Dehli seek refuge at the camps” is written on the bottom of the still. Beside the white steps, on the left side, is a black and white print of a soldier’s face and hand pointing towards the viewer with the word “YOU” only visible underneath other words. The statement “We have become rolling stones.” is written on the bottom of the still. The fourth still is of the actor standing looking at the actress who is sitting across the table. The table has a glass top. Behind them, the viewer can see the ceiling of the gallery with pipes and lighting strips. The question “What is a Muslim?” is written on the bottom of the still.]

The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation presented a staged reading of Rehan Ansari's play Unburdened, which was featured in Enacting Stillness as an installation of performance ephemera at The 8th Floor. The play is set during the period of President Obama's first inauguration. A journalist from Toronto travels to Karachi, where he becomes consumed with our collective inability to truly comprehend what it is to live inside a war. He glimpses the enemy's point of view: we see an argument for militancy that has a global audience. The audience observes the protagonist's struggles through his partner's eyes as he feverishly communicates with her over the phone and Skype. In Karachi, he stays with his elderly aunt and uncle who have lived with a terrible secret over the course of their 60-year relationship that began amidst the Partition of India.
