[Image Description: 13 women, all wearing colorful head scarves and short sleeve tops or dresses, sit around tables full of food, wine, and bottles of alcohol. In the forefront of the photo is the corner of two tables, covered in blue tablecloths with a pattern of images of fruits on them, with five women sitting on the south and east ends. Behind them are 8 women around one rectangular table. The women are either eating, in conversation, or silent.]

Organized in collaboration with Rubin Foundation grantee Triangle Arts Association, Lucia Nimcova presented a performative lecture related to her ongoing project Khroniky, which functions as an archive of photography, video, and sound recordings from western Ukraine. Nimcova describes the work as a folk opera: a collection of songs, stories, music, performance, and field recordings, existing somewhere between an ethnographic document and musical theatre.

Khroniky emerges from Nimcova’s previous work on both the female experience in Eastern Europe and the contested histories of her native Rusyn minority. This work similarly seeks to show how the past influences the present. In the end, it is an attempt to navigate a polyphony of subjectivities, in the context of Ukraine’s unstable situation, both historically and in present day. Nimcova participated in Triangle Arts Association’s studio program in late 2015. Her performative lecture at The 8th Floor was supported in part by the Slovak Arts Council (www.fpu.sk).
