Post-conceptual artist Tony Cokes together with art historian and critic Tom McDonough discussed Cokes' practice, addressing several of his text-based videos currently on view at The 8th Floor in Revolution from Without…. Drawing from sources including journalism, critical and cultural theory, popular music, and propaganda, Cokes edits and deconstructs language to make visible that which we suspect has been strategically removed from circulation.
Bios
Tony Cokes lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island, where he serves as Professor in the Department of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University. Recent exhibitions include the 10th Berlin Biennale, Berlin; Hessel Museum, Annandale-on-Hudson; Whitechapel Gallery, London; ZKM, Karlsruhe; REDCAT, Los Angeles; SFMOMA, San Francisco; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Pera Museum, Istanbul; and the Louvre, Paris.
His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum, New York; Centre George Pompidou, Paris; Kunsthallen, Copenhagen; Wexner Center for the Visual Arts, Columbus; and Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane, among many others.
Tom McDonough is a writer and critic based in upstate New York and Toronto. He writes extensively on contemporary art, with recent essays on Theaster Gates, Philippe Parreno, Adam Pendleton, Wolfgang Tillmans, Christopher Williams, and Haegue Yang. His articles have appeared in journals such as Afterall, Artforum, Bomb, Canadian Art, October, Parkett, and OSMOS, where he is a contributing editor. Boredom, his anthology in the “Documents in Contemporary Art” series from the Whitechapel, appeared earlier this year. He has taught at University of California, Berkeley and Harvard, and currently is Associate Professor of Art History at Binghamton University, State University of New York.
