SOCIAL REPAIR: Art, Design, & Impact
Thursday, July 19, 2018
from 6 to 8:30pm
A workshop, led by arts manager, author, consultant, and coach Doris Rothauer, for artists, curators and cultural workers from non-profit organizations interested in designing a better future for society with their work.
Artists, designers and other cultural producers are integral to change making movements that address and respond to some of the most pressing issues society is facing today. In tandem with this, cultural and social justice organizations make artists’ efforts and work visible, available, and accessible.
This workshop introduced tools to develop impactful strategies for creating, performing and promoting artwork, while aiming for inclusive, sustainable and socially just practices. How can we as individuals and organizations make a difference? We need to develop a different understanding of what art is and what it can do, shifting our perspective from output to outcome.
In this context, new modes of social practice have generated methods driven by impact over mere profit, by outcome over output. Bringing community focused art and design practices together with socially impactful business modeling, this workshop provided insights and tools for artists, curators and individuals working in the non-profit sector who aim to promote social justice with their work. Topics covered in the workshop included best practice examples of social art and design, an introduction to strategic thinking based on visioning, and tools and methods from social entrepreneurship and impact business modeling.
